This course instructs participants in both lifeguarding and CPR for the professional rescuer. Successful completion will gain the participant certification by the American Red Cross, with the exception of the Junior Lifeguarding course.

Successfully complete the two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations:

Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:

  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.

Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
  • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

This is a blended course.  An online portion is required to be completed before attending the in-person portion.  All in-person days are required to complete the course.  Online portion is emailed out two weeks before the in-person portion.  Contact Katie Wright if you would like the online portion sooner.  Classes with fewer than 5 participants registered will be canceled and moved to another session

Pre-requisites:

1. Must be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled in-person class session.

2. Jump in, submerge, resurface and swim 150 yards (6 lengths) continuously, tread water for 2 minutes, and then swim 50 more yards (2 lengths more).  You may swim using the front crawl (freestyle), breaststroke or a combination of both.  Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.  Swim goggles are allowed (but not provided).  When treading you must only use your legs.

3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.  Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.  Swim goggles are not allowed.  Surface dive (head-first or feet-first) to a depth of 7 feet or more to retrieve a 10-pound object.  Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface.  Exit the water without using the ladder or the steps.

Interested in becoming a Lifeguard? Take this American Red Cross Lifeguard Course!

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification instructors will train and certify participants in American Red Cross Lifeguard programs. The course will include CPR/First Aid/AED/O2. Certifications can be used to work at YMCA pools as well as other aquatic facilities. We will give each participant a Lifeguard fanny pack that includes a pocket mask, whistle, and gloves. Register at any Upper Palmetto YMCA location or on our website ymca.org.

All classes are blended, the online portion is required to be completed before attending the in-person portion. Both in-person days are required to complete the course.
